Madison Events Nov. 30 - Dec. 6
THURSDAY NOVEMBER 30
MUSIC
Swollen Members
The Annex, 9:30pm, $12 18+
Because there just aren’t enough group names euphemizing genitalia, the members of hip-hop duo Swollen Members chose the not-so-subtle moniker and hoped the music would rise above the name. Perhaps to offset their titter-inducing band name, Swollen Members MCs Madchild and Prevail (along with DJ Rob The Viking) rap with a prominent dark streak. An Addams Family-like organ anchors “Fuel Injected,” from the recent album Black Magic, and songs like “Horrified Nights,” “Lady Venom,” and “Killing < Spree” only reinforce the darkness—or at least as dark as dick jokes get.
Euforquestra + Public Property
High Noon Saloon, 9pm, $5
Euforquestra could easily hold its audience with the skimpy funk groove of the average jam band, but the Iowa City outfit weaves in Afrobeat and brassy reggae that yields just as much warmth and chemistry as any number of drawn-out Hammond organ solos (er, no more, no less). Appropriately, the music has a thick coat of domesticated foreign percussion, but there’s more competence than novelty in the group’s jams. Fellow Iowans Public Property bring an American brightness to reggae and ska influences (though they do boast a “six-man rhythm section”). Thousands of dollars of equipment was recently stolen from Public Property’s van, and the band is taking Paypal donations through publicprop.com.

FRIDAY DECEMBER 1
MUSIC
Michael Massey
Café Montmartre, 7pm
Michael Massey has been a vital member of the Madison’s music scene since the late ’70s as a member of Chaser, Boys In White, and more recently as a solo artist and key participant in the Mad Cabaret troupe. A pair of 2005 albums demonstrate his diverse nature: Be Careful How You Say Pianist is a laid-back set of solo piano instrumentals, and Attack Of The Delicious is a lush, highly produced pop-rock album with strings, synths, guitar, and Massey’s weathered, slippery voice. Even more sides should be on display here as Massey celebrates the release of an instrumental Christmas album, The Present, featuring original arrangements of traditional holiday carols.
Greeley Estates + Drop Dead, Gorgeous, Alesana
The Loft, $8/$10*
With oppressively whiny emo-screamo hybrids invading MTV, a little space had to open up eventually for bands that match that description yet aren’t too stultifying. Greeley Estates is restrained and tasteful compared to many of its peers. Maybe the screamo part of its sound is done with just enough weirdness and conviction, or maybe the production on the recent Far From The Lies manages not to be totally ham-fisted. If you’re already rolling your eyes at this kind of stuff, it’s best to stay away, but if you don’t, it won’t be entirely what you expect (maybe 80 percent, but that’s what passes for originality in that niche). If Greeley Estates fit in the bearable middle of this musical vein, the lumbering metal of openers Drop Dead, Gorgeous fills the bill out with extra heaviness, and Alesana will indulge fans intent on doing some serious moping. Opening: Oregon Falls, Pasiflora.

FILM
Cinematheque: Damnation
Vilas Hall, 7:30pm, free*
Those a little wary of spending eight hours immersed in grey, spiritually drained rural Hungary in Béla Tarr’s Sátántángo, or even four hours in Tarr’s Werckmeister Harmonies, should consider Damnation a relatively brisk two-hour introduction to the highly distinct—and culturally significant—vision of Tarr and novelist László Krasznahorkai, his three-time collaborator. All the Tarr trademarks appear: the long, slow tracking shots, the hangdog hero, and the ink-black, decrepit locations. But Damnation is less overtly obscure than the two films that followed, and its story of a jilted lover and his melancholy pub crawl, while slow as chilled molasses, is easy to understand and hypnotically beautiful, even at its bleakest. At the least, neophytes will be able to experience firsthand the style that directors around the world have been ripping off for the last decade or so.

SATURDAY DECEMBER 2
MUSIC
The Wood Brothers
The Annex, 9:30pm, $10
The Wood Brothers team Medeski, Martin & Wood bassist Chris with his sibling Oliver. Though both became professional musicians after graduating from high school, their paths diverged: Guitarist Oliver moved to Georgia and focused on rootsy folk-blues, while Chris ended up in New York pushing the boundaries of jazz with MMW. But the brothers remained close, and eventually that connection grew into a full-fledged collaboration and debut album, the intimate and alluring Ways Not To Lose, produced by John Medeski.
**The Subdudes
Barrymore Theatre, 8pm, $20/$22
Nearly every band that draws on roots music is guilty of slathering on the masculinity a bit too thick, but not so much New Orleans’ traditional-yet-glossy Subdudes. Their mix of R&B, country, southern jazz, and even a touch of zydeco is secure in its unassuming pleasantry. Few of today’s younger country- and blues-tinged musicians would dare kick off an album with a bright “na-na-na-na” vocal hook, but that’s what the Subdudes do on this year’s Behind The Levee. They’ve been plying their friendly yet anonymous trade since the mid-’80s, and after parting ways briefly in 1996 they almost immediately began playing reunion shows, finally reforming in 2002.
WORT’s 31st Birthday Bash w/ The Rousers, Sean Michael Dargan
High Noon Saloon, 8pm, $10/$12
Have you seen the petition lamenting Clear Channel’s decision to pull the plug on 92.1 The Mic? It includes the preposterous statement “The Mic is the only voice covering progressive politics.” Seems someone is overlooking one of Madison’s most stalwart voices: 89.9FM WORT, which has been able to survive as a listener-supported independent voice for 31 years. Instead of whining to a mega-corporation, why not put that energy into helping WORT celebrate 31 years of do-it-yourself broadcasting with this show? The Rousers are a longtime Madison roots-rock favorite led by the powerful voice of Frank Furillo and the lightning guitar of Ernie Connor. Tongue And Groove offer up a dancey mix of blues and R&B, while Sean Michael Dargan convenes his trio for an energetic and offbeat take on heartland rock.
**Eric Sommer
Mother Fool’s Coffeehouse, 8pm, $6*
Folkie Eric Sommer lays down thick, warm grooves with his acoustic guitar, bringing new excitement to even battered blues chestnuts like “Sittin’ On Top Of The World” with a voice that’s smooth and light but never quite bland. While his delivery’s friendly and pleasant, his excellent fingerpicking carries an all-too-important touch of aggression, so don’t be surprised if a solo instrumental or two turns out to be as engaging as Sommer’s original songs. Sommer has shared stages with people like Buddy Guy and Dr. John, too, so he can certainly hold his own.

FILM
Cinematheque: My Young Auntie
Vilas Hall, 7:30pm, free*
Many Americans know the Shaw Brothers’ Hong Kong film empire indirectly through Quentin Tarantino’s simulacrum Kill Bill, which flashed the Shaw logo even before the opening credits, as much in winking homage as to relieve itself of the burden of influence. My Young Auntie, made by Shaw stable director Lau Kar-leung, is a 1980 kung-fu comedy of Chinese social mores conveniently set amid a succession struggle in a conservative martial arts family. Things are made interesting as much by the expertly choreographed combat as by the fact that much of it centers on a Kung Fu heroine in the person of Hui Ying-hung.

**Burden Brothers
The Annex, $10, 8pm 18+
Toadies were one of the ’90s’ strangest and most gratifying alt-rock acts (at least in their brief moment of fame), and singer Todd Lewis pulled many of that band’s better ingredients—solid hard-rock hooks, weird lyrics, baritone-to-wail vocals—into the Burden Brothers. That’s not to say he hasn’t done anything new with it—the band’s latest album, Mercy, pulls in random bits of country, metal, and even Nick Cave-style morbidity into a sound that’s always welcomed playful experimentation. The Burdens should satisfy folks who thirst for the ballsier, weirder acts that warped the hard-rock scene circa 12 years ago. This show raises money for the family of Liz Williams, a local tattoo artist and bartender who died in October. Opening: 12 Gauge Pump, Kill Junior.
Tally Hall + Zox
High Noon Saloon, 9pm, $10 18+
Can a band whose members wear color-coded neckties and cram random-ass choral, hip-hop, and classical interludes into jaunty pop songs hold up as more than a novelty? Tally Hall has made it work for a few years, at least, and even if the group’s songwriting isn’t all that innovative at the core, it’s pretty enjoyable to listen to more than once or twice. (And you’ve got to admire any group of dorks who can lay down the occasional rap without making asses of themselves.) It may start to grate eventually, but the band handles it all with respectable chops and a redeeming ability to laugh at itself. The slightly more compact sound of Zox also makes good on what would otherwise just be a gimmick—in this case, spacey, rockable pop songs with spunky fiddle leads.

**Shapes And Sizes + Thieves On Holiday
Café Montmartre, 9pm, $5
Whimsy is currency in certain indie-rock circles, especially the ones that Shapes And Sizes inhabits, having emerged from British Columbia to release its self-titled debut on the Asthmatic Kitty label. That comes through more engagingly in its music than in its marketing efforts (the band’s website describes the music as “a whale with wings and a tomato that tastes like a strawberry”). Though the songs can come off as twee, the hodge-podge of chirpy vocals, meandering guitars, and plonky piano (and much more random instrumentation) has a solid pop spine that keeps it from getting old too fast. New-ish local act Thieves On Holiday has already fashioned a dark, spacious sound that should make it candy for shoegazers and rockers alike—and probably worth keeping up with in the future. If you’re on the fence about getting there early, the songs on the band’s MySpace page might persuade you.
